English Ice Hockey Association Mandates Neck Guards in Wake of Adam Johnson’s Tragic Passing
The English Ice Hockey Association (EIHA) has swiftly adjusted its regulations in response to the heartbreaking loss of Adam Johnson. Beginning in January, it will be mandatory for all players to wear neck guards as a critical safety measure.
In a statement released on Monday, the organization affirmed its unwavering commitment to prioritize the safety of its players above all else. The EIHA stated, “We are firmly committed to our obligation to exhaust every possible means to ensure that a tragic incident of this nature never befalls our sport again.”
This decisive action comes just 48 hours after Johnson’s life was tragically cut short due to injuries sustained when he was slashed in the throat by a skate during an on-ice collision. While EIHA officials initially referred to the incident as a “freak accident,” South Yorkshire Police announced on Sunday that they are conducting an investigation into the matter. Johnson was only 29 years old.
While neck guards will continue to be optional for the remainder of 2023, the EIHA has made a resounding “strong recommendation” for players to wear them while on the ice. The organization noted that the immediate implementation of the mandatory rule change was delayed due to anticipated supply issues.
The EIHA emphasized, “It is unacceptable for any player to lose their life while playing sport. Our responsibility is not only to avert the recurrence of such a heart-breaking accident, but also to pre-emptively address other foreseeable incidents in the future.”
EIHA officials acknowledged the possibility of additional rule changes in the near future, stating, “We bear both a legal and a moral obligation to respond in a measured and pragmatic way.” They also expressed a commitment to actively participate in comprehensive evaluations at the international level to contribute to a safer and more secure environment for all ice hockey players.
